IPX8 torches
IPX8 torches are tested for use under water: the manufacturer decides to what depth and for how long, as long as that is more demanding than the fixed IPX7 test (1 metre, 30 minutes). Please note: an IPX8 classification does not make your flashlight a diving light. For prolonged use or greater depth, you need a real diving light, specifically built and tested for that purpose. Features of IPX8 torches
An IPX8 torch is tested for submersion under conditions determined by the manufacturer: the standard does not prescribe a fixed depth or duration, only that the test must be more demanding than that for IPX7 (1 metre, 30 minutes). In practice, this usually means a few metres of depth for a limited time, not hours of use at great depth.
That makes an IPX8 torch suitable for falling into the water, a trip by kayak or a short dip, but it is not a replacement for a real diving light. Diving torches are specifically built and tested for prolonged use at depth, with a housing and seal designed for exactly that.
After use in salt water, always rinse the lamp with fresh water; salt can affect the seals over time. Store the lamp dry and check the sealing ring for dirt or damage before use.
