Privacy statement

In 2015, Chris Reeve launched the small Inkosi and the large Inkosi. This brand commonly chooses names that refer to South African cultural or ethnic elements. 'Inkosi' means 'Chief', as in 'leader'. This is a fitting name because Chris Reeve Knives is a market leader, and this brand is known for their high-quality knives.

## Zero Tolerance: heavy-duty and American 

Zero Tolerance knives are designed by Ken Onion, among others, in collaboration with Strider Knives. They are manufactured entirely in the United States. Some of Zero Tolerance's most popular knives are the 0550 and 0560 knife, developed with Rick Hinderer. The materials that are used are very robust and the blades are 'built like a tank'. A number of knives, including the 0350, feature the SpeedSafe® assisted opening system. This opening system ensures that the knives are very easy to open with one hand.

## History of NOC Knives
NOC Knives began in 2017 as a specialised design and manufacturing facility in Yangjiang, China as an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) for several already established parties within the knife industry. There are two versions of the Sebenza 31: the small Sebenza and the large Sebenza. Both were made from top-quality materials such as titanium and S35VN steel. This tube is located in between both scales and around the pivot. Because the tube is as thick and the blade and washers combined, the blade will always be centred and move smoothly. ## Why the bar was raised so high


‘Chris Reeve is leaving [Chris Reeve Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_329)’. For many knife enthusiasts this was one of the most shocking news reports in 2016. After all, it is no secret that Chris Reeve completely changed the knife world as we know it. Chris Reeve invented many things. Think, for instance, of the integral lock, also known as the framelock. Or what about CPM S35VN steel, a stainless type of steel developed in cooperation with Crucible Steel Company. Today almost any knife manufacturer uses the framelock and CPM S35VN steel for their production knives. Many experts claim that both the steel and the lock are absolute perfection. It is definitely for a reason that the Chris Reeve Knives are for many the ultimate knives. 


It is also why Chris Reeve’s departure came as such as shock. What does this mean for the company? What will happen with Chris Reeve Knives? Fortunately Anne Reeve, Chris’ ex-wife was the answer. With her son, Tim Reeve, she took over Chris Reeve Knives. This, however, still left many with a lot of unanswered questions. After all, the brain behind CRK just left. Could we still expect the same innovative features and quality that put CRK on the map?


You can imagine the surprise at the Blade Show 2018, when Chris Reeve Knives introduced the Impinda. A cooperation between Chris Reeve Knives and the incredibly popular knife maker and designer William (Bill) Harsey.

A convex grind is difficult to produce in large numbers. For that reason you hardly ever come across it on production knives. And yet [Fällkniven](kato://content/migrated_pageid_321) has successfully done so for over 20 years. Quite the achievement.


If you carry out more detailed work with a knife with a convex edge you will immediately notice the difference. Take, for instance, feather sticks. You will notice that you can cut the curls more evenly.


There are, of course, also 'downsides' to the convex grind. Some people find it a lot harder to sharpen. After all, you sharpen a 'convex' edge, and not a flat v-edge. The solution is stropping. In doing so you keep the convex grind sharp, without having to sharpen it too often. If the knife has become dull, you can use sharpening stones to sharpen a great convex grind, or you can use a sharpener such as the [Work Sharp Ken Onion edition](kato://product/WSKTS-IKO-UK), which naturally leaves you with a convex edge.


## Where are Fällkniven knives made?


In contrast to what people might think, Fällkniven knives are made in Japan. For years Fällkniven has been doing business there with the best knife makers the city has ever known. The fixed knives are produced by Hattori. Here, they apply the convex grinds by hand. The folding knives are made by Moki, a very prominent party when it comes to stunning gentleman's knives.


## Difference Fällkniven F1 and F1 Pro


For years the conventional Fällkniven F1 was the standard. And today it is still one of the best and most popular outdoor knives on the market. Fällkniven, however, decided in 2015/2016, twenty years after the original release of the F1, that it was time to produce a modified version of the F1: the Pro collection.


The most important differences between the two are the type of steel, the guard, the size of the handle and the scope of delivery.


### CoS vs VG10


One of the main differences is the type of steel. The F1 is made from laminated CoS steel, and the F1 Pro is made from laminated Elmax steel. Let's start with lamination: this means that there is a core of good and hard knife steel, laminated in between two layers of softer stainless steel. As such the blade is stronger and tougher, while the edge is still very hard.


Originally, the F1 was made from VG10 steel and the F1 Pro was made from CoS steel. VG10 is stainless and easy to sharpen. It retains its sharpness well and can definitely handle its own. A great type of steel for an all-round outdoor knife. But Fällkniven felt they could do better.


For that reason they started testing CoS-cobalt steel for a couple of years. Still stainless and relatively easy to sharpen, but CoS will retain its sharpness even longer and can definitely handle its own. On a chemical level VG10 and CoS are not that different. However, we suspect that CoS has a finer grain structure. Just like the difference between a 'normal' type of steel and a powdered type of steel. As such it will retain its sharpness longer and can handle a lot more.

Meanwhile, Fällkniven has continued using CoS steel in the production of the F1 and the steel of the F1 Pro has been upgraded to Elmax steel. Böhler Elmax is a fine and tough steel from Austria. Elmax stays sharp for a really long time but is also easy to sharpen yourself. Elmax is also very corrosion resistant.

Not only the type of steel is different about the F1 Pro. The thickness of the blade and the included grind are also different. The Fällkniven F1 has a 4.3 mm thick blade. The F1 Pro has a 4.9 mm thick blade. As such it feels a little more robust. Because of the lower grind the knife also has more 'spine' left to absorb the heavy loads. The F1 Pro is better suited to handle more serious cutting work.

## Chris Reeve Sebenza 31: the innovations


As the name might already suggest the Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 is an update of the Sebenza 21. This also means that it isn't a completely new model. Only an update with some important changes when compared to the 21.


### Ceramic lockbar interface


Okay this might sound difficult, but it really isn't. The Sebenza 21 is enhanced with a hardened titanium lockbar which immediately closes on the back of the blade to lock it. New for the 31 is that a ceramic ball was pressed into the end of the lockbar. This ball serves as a detent ball and 'lockbar insert' at the same time. Ceramic is harder than titanium and will therefore not wear out as quickly. It will also move better when it comes into contact with steel.

This system is not completely new. The Inkosi and Umnumzaam were already enhanced with this system. It is a lot more sustainable than that of the 21 and therefore an improvement. Characterizing for Chris Reeve Knives is that they always carefully think about these types of innovations. Decisions are not made overnight. Still one of the strengths of this rock-solid brand.

The Kizer Sheepdog was designed by Chris Conaway, founder of Sheepdog Knives; a company making custom, handmade knives in California. The Sheepdog is one of his most recognizable designs, originally introduced as a 'custom-only' handmade knife. Later, however, Kizer got permission to make this knife available to a larger audience.

The collaboration between Kizer and Chris Conaway dates back to 2016, when Kizer first added the Sheepdog design to their Vanguard and premium lines. This made the Sheepdog accessible to a larger audience and more affordable than the hand-made version, of course.

We have over ten years of experience with different types of flashlights. In those years, we've seen the development of flashlights happen really quickly. That's why our expectations for a good flashlight are much higher than ten years ago.


## The short route: a few hints what to look for


The fastest way to simplify the choice for a good flashlight is by starting with a well-known brand. ## The longer route: the main technical aspects brought to light


Searching for a really good flashlight is easier when you know what to look for. We will help you to distinguish between the good and the bad. We’ll focus on the main features of flashlights: light output, LED technology, battery technology, electronics and materials. It comes down to the visible and invisible qualities of modern torches.

## What are lumens in a flashlight?
Light capacity is expressed in lumens. Lumens are the total amount of light emitted from an LED. The more lumens a flashlight has, the more light it emits. The internationally accepted standard for lumens is the ANSI / NEMA FL 1-2009 standard. This standard has been established by well-known American multinationals such as Duracell and Energizer. It describes the measurement procedures for 'directional lighting'. This also includes flashlights. The flashlight industry has also created an additional standard of its own: the ANSI / PLATO FL-1 standard.

## Lumen or ANSI standard?
Almost all modern flashlights come from China. This is true of both good and bad flashlights. However, the manufacturers of quality flashlights use the FL1 lumen standard because they have nothing to hide. Manufacturers who do have something to cover up often only say 'lumens' so that they don't have to follow the ANSI standard measurement procedure. Performance is then often exaggerated. So when purchasing a flashlight, pay attention to whether they mention ANSI FL1 lumens. The icons on the packaging of flashlights also provide clarity.

Although the practical value of the ANSI FL1 standard has also been criticized, companies that do use the standard put more effort into creating a truthful picture than companies that don't use the standard at all.

## LED and lumens
Lumen specification and the LED used are two related factors. That is to say, each LED has a certain maximum amount of lumens that can be produced under optimal conditions. For maximum light output, an LED is driven to maximum capacity. Because the lifespan of an LED suffers from such high voltage, LEDs in flashlights are not driven to this capacity. Usually, flashlights use ninety to ninety-five percent of the capacity.

## Capacity (Watts) and lumens
Variants with a type number ending in the number 2 are the second generation of the specific LED. This table clearly shows that the number of lumens per Watt is increasing. LEDs are becoming more powerful and efficient, and so are LED flashlights. Compared to a light bulb, LED flashlights are already incredibly powerful, and the difference is getting bigger and bigger!

Most consumer flashlights have less than 1100 lumens. Brighter LEDs are less efficient and consume more energy without offering much added value in normal use.

## Battery technology
The most limiting factor of a quality flashlight is the battery. For high performance lighting you need high performance batteries. Different types of battery are available. For example, you can choose a flashlight that runs on alkaline batteries, rechargeable Li-ion 18650 batteries, or rechargeable 18650 batteries.

**Alkaline batteries**. There are still good flashlights being made that run on the well-known alkaline 1.5 volt AA batteries, but these batteries don't have the capacity needed to power LEDS for 1000 lumens. Alkaline batteries also have an increased risk of leakage. When a battery in the housing of a flashlight leaks, there is a very good chance that the flashlight won't work properly. What a waste of money!

**Rechargeable Li-ion 18650 batteries**. The modern commonly used standard for flashlights is the [Li-ion 18650 battery](kato://content/migrated_pageid_561). This battery has high power and a high capacity, so it supplies enough juice for the energy-hungry LEDs. A new development is that flashlights are being produced where the 18650 battery within the housing of the flashlight itself can be charged with a micro-USB cable.

Shot Show 2019, a place where many brands show their new models to the world for the first time. One of these brands is [Spyderco](kato://content/migrated_pageid_476), which introduces a new stunning knife almost each show. This year they also wowed us with multiple new models. The Spyderco Ikuchi is one of them. This pocket knife was designed by Paul Alexander and it is the fourth pocket knife he produced in cooperation with Spyderco.


## Paul Alexander


We were overjoyed when we learned that Paul Alexander would also be present at the Shot Show. You are probably familiar with the name. Paul Alexander designed multiple amazing pocket knives such as the Spyderco Ouroboros, Sliverax and Parata. Paul Alexander has a background in mechanical engineering and has been a fan of knives his whole life. His designs can be recognized by the organic shapes and wavy lines in the design. As with most Santoku kitchen knives the edge is lower than the handle, and the handle is narrower at the pivot than at the pocket clip.


## De Spyderco Ikuchi


The Ikuchi, however, is different from the three models mentioned above. Here we cannot find this Santoku shape. The Ikuchi is namely based on a traditional slipjoint! A surprising but right choice made by Paul Alexander. The Ikuchi is taking the knife world by storm. The slim design and unique opening mechanism, combined with Spyderco's famous compression lock, turns out to be the perfect combination for many people. Curious? We most certainly were. For that reason we got hold of Paul Alexander to hear everything about his designs and the concept behind the Spyderco Ikuchi.

In December 2014 we have done a new comprehensive test with ceramic knives of multiple manufacturers. We have tested the knives on sharpness, how long they remain sharp, user-friendliness, how it holds under pressure and how it reacts to sharpening. At the 2019 Shot Show we saw a lot of amazing stands. A brand that really stood out, however, was [Kizer](kato://content/migrated_pageid_403). The brand installed a beautiful light box with prints of their most popular pocket knives. The light from this box definitely highlighted all the new models they brought with them. This was great because we were curious to learn more! Our conclusion after the show? 2019 will be an amazing year for Kizer.


## The Kizer Gemini 2.0: new handle materials!


Anyone who has heard of Kizer has also heard of the Gemini. An incredibly cool and affordable pocket knife made from top-quality materials, designed by Ray Laconico. Considering the popularity of the Gemini Kizer decided to introduce more versions of the handle. At the 2019 Shot Show they had three versions for us to admire. One with brown canvas micarta, one with carbon fibre and one with cross-cut carbon fibre. This means that the carbon fibre was cut out in such a way that you are left with a wood grain pattern, instead of the standard woven pattern. Which will it be? That is not 100% certain yet. Very exciting! All three are stunning.

## Gerber Fastball


The Gerber Fastball is one of the most promising pocket knives from the Gerber 2019 line-up. A CPM S30V wharncliffe 7.5 cm blade with a flipper and an aluminium handle. It opens quickly, which is also how it got its name. In addition, it feels great in hand. Made in Portland, Oregon, USA and very solid. Ball bearings have been placed around the pivot to make sure it opens smoothly.

When I started working here in 2017 I wasn't really interested in knives. I wasn't 'crazy about knives' so to say. Yes, I used them in the kitchen but didn't think 'expensive' knives were worth their money. Today I know better! I love spending time in my kitchen and cutting ingredients is truly a relaxing experience. A good knife helps! I can therefore wholeheartedly say that, fortunately, you do not have to be 'crazy about knives' to appreciate top-quality knives.
