We are happy Böker will continue to expand the successful line of, in Solingen produced, traditionals. Our favourite is the Böker Barlow. It is for a reason we had a [Knivesandtools Exclusive](kato://product/BO100502) made of this exact knife. This year Böker has also introduced a couple cool Barlows. In the image listed above you, for instance, see the Böker Barlow Integrals. With micarta liners and bolsters from one piece. As such the total weight has been reduced with another 20 grams. These knives only weigh 30 grams! Modern, but still traditional.

## The exclusive version

That's why we asked Böker for a different handle material: micarta! This material is made from canvas and synthetic resin and offers plenty of grip. We think this material is a fantastic choice for handles. You can clearly see the texture of the layers of textiles in the material. And even better: when using a pocket knife with a micarta handle, you will notice that the handle gets darker. This is due to the grease in your hands, among other things. This is a normal process that makes each knife unique in time! A special quality of micarta is that it offers great grip even in wet conditions. Arguably, it's even more grippy when wet than when it's dry.

Like the standard version, the blade is made from 440C steel. This is a good type of stainless steel that retains its sharpness well and is easy to sharpen when the time comes. _Never change a winning team_.

This knife is made in Solingen, Germany, a city known as Germany's knife capital. Böker has been producing high-quality knives in this city for over 150 years. The EDK pocket knife is a perfect blend of tradition and modern craftsmanship.

MKM Knives is one of the most exciting announcements of 2018. A new Italian brand, but still an old acquaintance. The name MIKITA also appears, something we also hadn’t heard of before. What is up with that? What is MKM Knives and why do we look forward to it?


## MKM and MIKITA


The abbreviation MKM stands for Maniago Knife Makers. Each knife enthusiast knows that Maniago is the knife capital of Italy. Perhaps even of the south of Europe. As Germany has Solingen and people in England know Sheffield, everyone knows that the best Italian knives come from Maniago. Literally at the same block at an industrial site in a suburb in this city in the north of Italy you will find all the large names from the Italian knife world. [Fox Knives](kato://content/migrated_pageid_378), [LionSteel](kato://content/migrated_pageid_443), [Viper](kato://content/migrated_pageid_486), Mercury and many others.


MIKITA is a cooperation of the last four companies. LionSteel, Viper, Fox and Mercury signed a network agreement in which they state to focus on raising the bar for knife makers in Maniago. They do so under the name of MIKITA: Maniago Innovation Knives Italy. By exchanging knowledge and ideas they are stronger together and increase the quality. 


The brands who joined forces to establish MIKITA now launched a new knife brand: MKM knives. The famous Italian quality Maniago knives are famous for, made by the four cooperating companies. Now you must understand why we are so excited!


## MKM Knives: cooperation with Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley


To immediately leave a mark with appealing models made by famous designers MKM decided to cooperate with the two biggest names in the international knife world: Bob Terzuola and Lucas Burnley. Both designers with an impressive track record, and many successful designs on their name.


Bob Terzuola can definitely be called one of the founders and pioneers in the field of the modern pocket knife. After all, he wrote incredibly popular books about quality knives, but more importantly: his designs have been loved for dozens of years. There are very few designers who last that long.


Lucas Burnley is a lot younger than Bob Terzuola, but in just a few years he has made a massive contribution to the knife world. As a designer he is incredibly productive and dozens of his designs are produced by famous brands such as CRKT and Böker, and now also by MKM Knives.

The kitchen knives from Solingen, Germany, are famous around the world. Because these brands' kitchen knives have been so popular for such a long time, they sometimes look very similar. Which brands are out there? And what are the differences and similarities? ## The test


In addition to testing Swiza pocket knives we also tested other knives. It is, after all, the best way to compare results. Swiza might not be the first brand you think of when you think of Swiss pocket knives. Most people think of Victorinox. For that reason it is important to compare both brands. To complete the comparison we also added the Böker Plus Tech-Tools to the mix. Comparable pocket knives because of their size and function. To test a great variety of materials and colours we selected the following models:

## You have a lot of experience with knives. What inspired you when designing the Ryson?
I’ve noticed that in recent years knives have become more and more luxurious and complex. They had to be as “drop shutty” as possible, with extra details, design elements, and hidden features. And while I truly appreciate the craftsmanship behind that, I found myself going back more often to simpler knives. Knives you’re not afraid to really put to work. I call those old school knives: think of [Emerson Knives](kato://content/migrated_topic_307), [Chris Reeve Knives](kato://category/chrisreevebrand), and [Rick Hinderer](kato://category/rickhindererbrand). Real tools, built for use, easy to maintain, and simple to take apart when needed.

## Determine the sharpening angle for your knife

The cutting edge of a knife can have different angles. The smaller the angle, the sharper the knife. Therefore, the cutting edge of a very sharp knife, is very narrow. Japanese knives are made of very hard steel (starting from 60 HRC) and can be made extremely sharp, when sharpened under a small angle. Other, for example German knives (55-58 HRC), often are made of slightly softer types of steel and are sharpened under a wider angle.

The angle of the cutting edge of Japanese knives is usually 30°. For normal knives you can use an angle between 36° and 40°. The sharpening angle for your knife is half the angle of the cutting edge (after all, you will sharpen on 2 sides). The sharpening angle of a Japanese knife (please find a few examples below) is therefore 15° (30°/2) and of other knives 18° to 20°.

Does your knife become dull or does it damage quickly? Then maybe you are sharpening the knife too thin. In this case, we recommend using a larger sharpening angle.
