Spyderco is a bit overrated lately. Before purchasing this knife I've been looking for the G10 scales variant but also for the same steel (or similar, like s30v, s35vn). It seems that on G10 scales you only get the VG10 steel and even that one is hard to find. So I bought the spy27 steel in FRN scales/handle. First impression was of a toy knife. There is no weight to feel. The FRN scales (which is an eufemistic term for dirt-cheap plastic) are so light that make me pay a lot of attention not to drop the knife out of hand. On top of this, the plastic is rather hard and feels dry in my hand. Unfortunately I bought 10 years ago a Shrapnel OG from Extrema Ratio that also pretends it has FRN handle. Well, ER handle is more like a tough rubber with a "matte" finish (due to fiber reinforcement) that feels like it bonds to your hand. I expected this kind of FRN from Spyderco too. It's not the case. The screw (bolt) that holds the pocket clip is of low quality, it's soft and I managed to strip it half-way just trying to unscrew it for the first time. I'll find a replacement in a hardware store. There are no washers between the blade and the scales. This is a big disappointment: the blade has to glide directly on the inner side of the plastic handle. I mean how much would increase the cost to put 2 washers; on a knife that is already pricey for what it is? In the mean time I bought some third-party scales and I'm waiting to arrive so I can make the knife look and feel like it should. The steel is quite interesting, takes a very keen edge in almost no time, is extremely responsive to strop-ing with green compound (so there is no need to use a sharpening stone unless the edge got really dull). Can't say how much of edge resistance as the knife is not meant to be used for heavy tasks (so cutting some paracord, some dog treats on daily basis is just light use). But it shaves! It is possible to flick-open with the F-finger nut you have to loosen the pivot screw to the point that the blade will have a small play sideways (when checking on that hold the knife just under the middle pin, not on the pivot pin as you may have seen on youtube where some guys show that they managed to flick-open without any play sideways: of course there is no play if they pinch the knife on the pivot pin!) Also you might want to take the lock spring out and try to straighten it a bit, if it feels too powerful. That will allow a smaller tension of the back-lock lever on the blade and that will make it feel a bit smoother while opening/closing the blade. Don't be shy to use oil right where the blade meets the lever. That will also help with the smooth action. Overall, this knife has a good steel with a good geometry and decent capabilities. The handle though looks like it was sourced from chinese industrial leftovers. I knew, before pkacing the order, that eventually I will replace the plastic handle with either a third-party one or a dim (do it myself) nice wood scales .
